Definition:

Diet: (from Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary)
1.  a.) A food or drink regularly provided or consumed. b.) habitual nourishment. c.) the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason. d.) a regimen of eating and drinking sparingly so as to reduce one's weight.
2.  Something provided or experienced repeatedly.

When you hear the word diet what comes to mind?  For most it's probably got something to do with punishment, restriction and maybe rice cakes...  The concept of going on a "diet" dates all the way back to the 1700's when the corset was invented.  The Atkin's diet didn't appear until 1994, but the first low-carb diet was documented back in 1825.

The American Dietietic Association has an interactive diet timeline that illustrates popular diets through history.  Just click on a year to see what diet craze was popular.  Be sure to check out 1985 - it's my favorite!
