Evolution Gone Bad!

More is Good??   Well, this concept definitely fits for some catagories - money, sleep, the amount of weight you can lift, etc.  But it's this same way of thinking that's caused us to evolve into the soda chugging, supersize eating society that we are.  I recently came across this great link http://www.thecooksden.com/calories/ that illustrates how our diet today compares with what it was in 1970.  Our average caloric intake has increased by 600 calories per day - that results in one pound of additional weight gain every six days, or 61 extra pounds per year!  Is there any question as to why we are currently faced with an "Obesity Epidemic"?

The report also states that in 1970 the United States had the 26th highest caloric intake in the world - but apparently that wasn't good enough.  No worries though because now..."We're #1!!"  So bask in our victory?!?!  Check out the interactive graphs take note of where the extra and calories are coming from and also our nation's 'vegetable' of choice...  Let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. Potatoes are definitely a vegetable, and frying them in canola oil just makes them healthier!

  2. Great post Amy!

What do you think is going on with the caloric intake from fat between 1999 and 2000 in the first interactive graph?
I must admit I was quite surprised to see that our daily grain calories have only risen ~260kcal/day since 1970. This is much less than I would've expected with the nut.pyramid/low fat diet push.

I think the greatest quote from the site was "of the 130 vegetable calories eaten daily, nearly 60% come from potatoes or potato chips."

130? 130??? Most people get more calories than that from their COFFEE! Wait. Does coffee count?

    ("But. . . I(sniff), I just can't seem to shed fat.")

  3. anonymous-
Can you please INCREASE your potato and canola oil intake so you can remove yourself from the reproductive stakes.

Take this one for the team, we will all be better for it.
